How to Invest in Your Future

Updated: Mar 26

We are all looking forward to a brighter future. So how do we invest in ourselves and make sure that that is what we are actively working towards?

Quote from Safiya: "The biggest investment you can make in your future is being a better you today"

Often, when we hear the word ‘invest’ we think about our money. Some of us put so much energy into researching crypto, bitcoin, building investment portfolios, signing up to online courses and the likes in order to secure our future...or so we think.

If you think that learning to invest your money well is the best way to set yourself up for a better future, I hate to break it to you, but you are sadly mistaken.

Now I have nothing against you using your money however you see fit; but I want you to ask yourself this: How else am I investing in my future?

There are different currencies we have in life. Yes, there’s money. But even more importantly, there is the currency of time. And even more importantly than money and time, we have the currency of energy. And we even have different types of energy, such as mental energy and physical energy.

How often do you strategise and intelligently plan how to dedicate your time and energy for the benefit of your future self?

My hope would be that you do so on a daily basis, but being that so many of us are busy and preoccupied with the demands of life, it may be an unrealistic expectation.

If you want to start prioritising your future, I think it is incredibly important that you have a long-term goal and reverse engineer the steps it will take to get there. Take your long-term goal and work it backwards. What will you need to do between now and, say, 5 years from now in order to achieve your goal?

I think we are generally great at doing this when it comes to career goals, where we know there are certain qualifications to acquire and levels of expertise to achieve before moving on to the next stages.

However, I think we should get more accustomed to practising this in all areas of our lives. Having long-term goals and breaking them down into medium-term goals, short-term goals and finally into small daily actions is the way towards a better future.

Of course, following through is a big part of formulating this elaborate plan. Through your actions, you are showing commitment to keeping yourself on the right path, especially in those moments where you are managing difficult emotions.

Not only does this build your mental toughness, but you demonstrate your ability to prioritise and practise self-control.

While committing to your bigger goals on a daily basis, it also helps for you to reframe your language. You can challenge the voice of yours that wants to make excuses for inaction.

Instead of saying “I’m too busy!”, be real with yourself. Are you busy or do you just not want to make time to exercise and get fit?

Do you really not have time to eat something healthy, or is it that you just don’t think it’s that important to give your body vital nutrients at this time?

Once you inject some reality into your statements, you’ll be surprised at how much easier it can be to make better decisions.

Remember, the biggest investment you can make in your future is being a better you today.
